Reading Challenge
from the Library:
October Bingo
This year, the library is introducing monthly challenges to encourage students to read outside their comfort zones. Ms. Evarts believes there is a book out there for everyone and hopes this challenge will help each student find a favorite. The challenge is posted on the bulletin board outside the library each month.
October is National Book Month, so the challenge is a little different. Instead of reading just one book, students are trying to win October Bingo. If they can reach BINGO within one book, that still counts, but they may have to read a couple of books to get five in a row. |

Young Cougars Kick Off the STEM Regatta Challenge
This week, our youngest Cougars from JPK, PK, and Kindergarten kicked off their early STEM activities by testing boats in the pool. This year's theme is the Regatta, inspired by the story of The Three Billy Goats Gruff. Students are challenged to help the goats cross the river without encountering the troll on the bridge.
The boat-testing activity encouraged students to brainstorm solutions and explore designs similar to those they will eventually create. Innovation Lab Instructor, Mr. Beaber, introduced the challenge, guided students through the problem-solving process, and encouraged students to think beyond the water and consider the role of air. By waving their hands near their faces, students could feel the air around them and begin to understand that even though air is invisible, it takes up space. This helped introduce the concept of buoyancy and how air inside a bowl-shaped boat can help it float.
Over the next couple of weeks, students will continue testing and prototyping their designs. They'll experiment with different materials to discover what floats and what sinks as they work toward creating their own boats. Stay tuned for more updates from the early STEM event in November!

Meet the Innovation Lab's New Bearded Dragon!
The Innovation Lab has a new resident—a baby bearded dragon that's about five weeks old! Students will have the opportunity to watch it grow to full size over the next year and help care for it. They'll observe changes in its coloration, learn about its diet, and have opportunities to hold and pet it. Caring for the bearded dragon will also help students develop empathy for animals.
Did you know that bearded dragons wave one of their front legs in a circular motion as a way of communicating, "Hey, I'm not a threat"? The new class pet has been very friendly and comfortable around people. He doesn't have a name yet, but we'll work together as a school to choose one.
Welcome to Clairbourn, little bearded dragon!

No Parents May Volunteer Until They Have Completed Live Scan
A new law requires all school volunteers who interact with children to be fingerprinted. Parents who were not able to complete fingerprinting on campus can do so at the Live Scan office. The school has an account at 80 W. Sierra Madre Blvd., Sierra Madre, CA 91024 (inside Mailbox & Postal, across from the Sierra Madre Playhouse) for this purpose, and parents can complete the process at a time that is convenient for them. Please fill out the form ahead of time.

Finding Inspiration During Hispanic Heritage Month

Hispanic Heritage Month honors the histories, cultures, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino people. Our students celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month through Spanish class research, Morning Assembly presentations, and a collaborative art project.
In Spanish class, students explored 21 Spanish-speaking countries and territories across North America, Central America, South America, the Caribbean, Europe, and Africa. Each student researched an assigned country or territory and shared an interesting fact during Morning Assembly. Presentations included Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Equatorial Guinea, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Puerto Rico, Uruguay, Venezuela, and Spain.

Our sixth graders also participated in a collaborative art project highlighting influential Hispanic figures and their contributions to the United States. Students learned about their accomplishments and reflected on connections to their own interests and experiences. Ellen Ochoa inspired students interested in science and space exploration, while Lin-Manuel Miranda resonated with a student who enjoys acting. Others connected with gymnast Laurie Hernandez’s perseverance through challenges and successes and with writer Sandra Cisneros’s creativity and ability to inspire through storytelling.
At Clairbourn, we encourage students to explore different cultures and heritages and recognize the many ways people can inspire others.
