Exploring Science, Reading, and Economics

Our third graders have had a busy and exciting season of learning, both inside and outside of the classroom!
Recently, they visited the La Brea Tar Pits, where they explored fascinating fossil exhibits featuring Ice Age creatures like mammoths, saber-tooth cats, and dire wolves. Students observed scientists at work in the fossil lab, experienced the sensation of getting stuck in sticky asphalt, and had a guided fossil detective tour. They also explored active dig sites and saw real tar bubbling to the surface. Special thanks to our wonderful parent chaperones for joining us on this memorable excursion!
Back at school, students participated in a Book Tasting Event at the tables outside of their classroom. With new titles from the book fair, they sampled a variety of genres, discovered new favorites, and were challenged to read at least one book from each genre before the end of the year—a fun and creative way to inspire a lifelong love of reading!
Students also had the chance to become young entrepreneurs during Market Day, putting the economic concepts they learned in class into practice. Working with partners, they developed market plans, created advertising posters in Canva, and produced their own products to sell. Afterward, they calculated income, subtracted production costs, and determined their net profits. It was an exciting hands-on learning experience that helped prepare them for future endeavors at the annual Clairbourn Entrepreneurial Fair!

A Heartfelt Thank You for an Unforgettable Book Fair

Dear Clairbourn Community,
We are incredibly grateful for the overwhelming support and enthusiasm that made our recent Book Fair an extraordinary success! While the fair itself was a whirlwind of excitement over just a few days, the journey began months ago, fueled by dedication, creativity, and countless hours of hard work from so many of you. This year’s Book Fair was packed with memorable moments including Donuts & Discussions, the JPK-K Family Social, Parents Read-Aloud sessions, and the inspiring author visits. Each event was a testament to the collaborative spirit of our community, and we’re so proud of what we accomplished together.
To our incredible volunteers—whether you were brainstorming ideas, extending warm hospitality, setting up displays, or stepping into any role behind the scenes —your efforts made all the difference. It’s your unwavering dedication and community spirit that transformed this event into something truly special.

They helped transform our vision into reality, most notably with the magical Super Reader arch outside the MPB, which welcomed every child into a world of imagination.
We’d also like to extend our sincere appreciation to our generous sponsors, whose support played a crucial role in making this event possible. Your belief in our mission helps foster a superpower of reading and learning in our students. (Sponsors lists pictures)
Lastly, we wish to extend our most heartfelt thanks to Mrs. Ward, our incredible librarian. From helping children discover their next favorite book to thoughtfully curating every corner of the Book Fair, her passion was evident in every detail. None of this would have been possible without her guidance and leadership. We are profoundly grateful for everything she did to ensure its success. As we close this chapter of the Book Fair, we want to express our deepest gratitude to each and every one of you. Together, we’ve created an experience that will inspire a superpower of reading for years to come.
Thank you for being such an amazing and supportive community. Keep turning those pages, Clairbourn!

Go Cougar Mathletes!!!
This past week, the 21 members of the Clairbourn Middle School Math Team participated in their first math competition of the year - Sigma. Sigma is a national contest where middle school teams across the country compete in five rounds throughout the year. Each round consists of eight challenging questions to be solved in 30 minutes. Top individual scorers at the end of the season will earn pins, and the top three teams will be awarded plaques.
Additionally, students took part in their first Math Madness match of the school year, competing against a middle school in Wisconsin. During the fast-paced, 30-minute contest, the Cougars started strong and were leading by six points before ultimately falling short in a close match. Top scorers were Hins with 6 out of 8 correct, followed by Atticus, Austin W. (8th Grade), Alex, Celine, and Kyle, each scoring 5 out of 8. The bracket rounds for Math Madness will start the week of October 27.
Please wish the Cougar Math Team all the best! |
