Creating Scholars and Leaders with Heart

Middle schoolers participated in an exciting Jeopardy-style quiz game about the Clairbourn student handbook. The five advisories competed to win bronze, silver and gold by conferring quietly and writing their answers on a white board. Dr. Patzlaff was the game show host and kept the game moving at a fast clip. Congratulations to Ms. Neilson's, Ms. Vinnedge's and Mr. Woo's advisories who won the gold, silver and bronze respectively. Go team!

Clairbourn Insights

Preschool Learning Unit: All About Apples!

Our youngest Cougars in JPK and PK explored apples through many hands-on activities during the “All About Apples” unit. From creating fizzy apple volcanoes to spark curiosity, to tasting apples and discovering sweet, tart, and crisp flavors, the children engaged all of their senses. They also enjoyed apple painting, using cut apples as stamps to make colorful art together, baking mini apple pies from scratch, and exploring a sensory station with an “apple pie” theme. This learning unit combined science, exploration, and creativity while celebrating the joys of fall!

Art That Makes You Think:
Abstracts and Inkblots

If you have not visited the glass display cases in the Robert Nafie Administration Building, please make sure to stop by and check out the amazing student artwork! Kindergarteners learned about abstract art and oil pastels. They discovered abstract art is a work made with lines, shapes, and colors, and is not seen the same way by all audiences. Students looked at Kandinsky's "Evenement Doux" from 1928 and took turns explaining what they saw. With Kandinsky's work as inspiration, they explored oil pastels for the first time, noticing that they are sticky and can blend very well, creating abstract works of art!

Students from fourth and fifth grades created painted works of art which were inspired by psychiatrist Hermann Rorschach. Rorschach was an amateur artist who took his interest in perspective within art to medical school. While in school, he developed a psychological test called the Rorschach test. The test consisted of a set of ten inkblots and patients were asked to describe what they saw in each image. Responses to these images were meant to reveal aspects of their personality, motivations, and emotional states. Students created their own "ink blots" and titled them based on what they saw in their own work of art; then they asked three peers what they saw!

Our students also worked hard to brainstorm and create designs for the yearbook cover. It was incredibly hard to choose this year with so many great works of art.

This year's front cover artist is Michelle in fifth grade! The back cover and front page artists are as follows:
Kinder: Kendrick, Luna
