September:
Drop Everything & Build

Middle school engineers demonstrate creativity and resilience in structural design

Every month, the middle school students drop whatever they are doing in science class and do an engineering challenge instead. This month, for the first Drop Everything & Build of the year, the students were challenged to build a bridge of straws that could hold the most weight. Each pair of engineers worked to overcome the constraints of flimsy straws, very limited tape, and limited time. There were creative shapes in the bases and the spans in all the straw bridges across the grades. This challenge proved to be extra difficult, but the engineers showed perseverance and kept working the whole time.

In the end, the winners were Hins and Keira in eighth grade; in seventh grade, the runners-up were Mars and Naveen, and the strongest bridge was built by Mila and Jeremy. In sixth grade, the runners-up were James and Benjamin, and the strongest bridge in the entire middle school was built by George and Siaana.

Well done, Cougar engineers!

Our third grade mathematicians put their learning into action

Students took part in a scavenger hunt, searching for clocks around their classrooms and recording the times they found. This hands-on activity helped reinforce their current math unit while keeping students engaged in their classroom learning.
