Clairbourn Insights

Third grade recently completed their journey traveling on the Oregon Trail! Not only did they learn about the adventure, but they also learned the ways of pioneer life. Working in family groups, students took on a pioneer persona (including a new name) and, each day, joined other families in a wagon train to move across the country. On their way they encountered many beautiful landmarks, but also challenges such as river crossings.

When they were not moving their wagons along the trail, they were sewing, square dancing, and learning how to churn butter. They also managed quite well with the limited food options, with many of them realizing they quite like beans!

We are happy to report the pioneers successfully completed their Oregon Trail journey. They crossed the Platte River and were amazed at the height of Chimney Rock. Our pioneers even made it to Independence Rock in time to celebrate Independence Day. Upon their arrival in Oregon City, cheers filled the air as they tossed their hats and bonnets in celebration of their 1,600 mile journey to their new lives in the "Land of Milk and Honey."

YEE HAW!

Lucy Miller (aka Mrs. Smith) & Jasper Wright (aka Mr. Berglund)
Building Connections

We love when our older Cougars get to spend time with our younger Cougars!

Student Council created a digital scavenger hunt for the first graders to explore our campus with Middle School partners. The older students scanned QR codes which linked to Student Council videos with clues about locations around the school. Once each first grader figured out the clue, they visited that location and got a stamp in their passport. The Middle School students encouraged and supported the first graders through every step of the scavenger hunt!

Additionally, in science class, the eighth grade class recently finished learning about the four forces of flight. After experiencing several hands-on labs for themselves, the students shared what they had learned with the preschool. The eighth graders brought paper kites over to the preschool and guided the students in varying the length of the tails of the kites to observe the effect of turbulence on lift. We are so proud of our biggest Cougars for sharing their time, patience, and knowledge with some of our littlest Cougars.

Presentations and Board Games in Social Studies

Do you know how many times the Constitution has been amended? Not sure? Just ask an eighth grader!

In social studies, eighth graders used their deep knowledge of the U.S. Constitution, the colonies, the Articles of Confederation, and more to create original board games. Working in pairs, they designed game boards, markers, question cards, spinners, and rule books. They tested each other’s knowledge while having a great time!

Clairbourn Life

From fifth graders planting for Earth Day to middle school golf tournaments, we love seeing our Cougars showing heart on and off campus.

Inspiring Young Minds: "Storyteller of the Week" Brings Stories to Life

In the Library, Mrs. Ward has begun the “Storyteller of the Week” program. This is a special program for our first grade students. Each week, one or two children are chosen and given a wordless picture book to take home. They come up with their own story to go with the book. The following week, these storytellers have an opportunity to sit in the special storyteller’s chair and tell their version of the story to their classmates. This is an opportunity for the students to experience the joy of storytelling, and is a treasured memory of many of our older students.
