Egg-citing Adventures

In our kindergarten classrooms, students learned about life science through the study of chickens and their life cycles. The fascination sparked by reading books on this subject quickly transformed into a hands-on and engaging learning experience.

Each classroom started with six eggs this year and successfully hatched three chickens. Students placed fertilized eggs into an incubator and waited for signs of growth over the 21 days. Through the process of candling fertilized eggs, they found viable eggs and also those unfit for hatching, deepening their understanding of the beginnings of life.

Anticipation peaked as they observed movement within the eggs and then welcomed the arrival of the chicks. Our kindergarten classrooms buzzed with activities centered on chickens, ranging from reading and painting with the chickens to exploring the different parts of a chicken. Students shared the responsibility of caring for the chicks through the chicken helper role. Students even enjoyed naming each baby chick that hatched! Check out their egg-citing adventures!

Junior Cougars Take the Field

The first through fourth grade Cougar athletes participated in the Clairbourn Junior Track Meet this Monday on the field. Students completed three field events, including the long jump, high jump, and shot put. They also participated in four running events, such as the 220-yard race, the 50-yard hurdles, the 50-yard sprint, and the shuttle relay.

It was a huge success, with everyone giving their best effort in every event. There was lots of cheering from parents and peers, and even the preschoolers came out to the field to cheer on their fellow Cougars! Everyone who participated enjoyed a well-deserved Gatorade and clementine after the meet. Athletes also earned two Big Foot tokens for their track necklaces. We are so proud of our junior athletes!
September: Drop Everything and Build

In honor of Pi Day, the middle school students were given a circle-themed challenge: to build a device that could deliver a ping pong ball to the exact center of a bullseye target. Only the devices were allowed to cross the outer circle of the bullseye – the engineers themselves could not reach toward the inner circle. The engineers were given a variety of materials, and every team put their own unique twist on the devices they built. Gravity was employed to good use, various extension methods were attempted, and the engineers tested the limits of their hand-eye coordination.

In the end, the runners-up in the sixth grade were Summer, Mia & James, and Benjamin & Rodwin, and the most successful device in the sixth grade was built by Jason & George. In the seventh grade, the runners-up were Emma & Ariel and the most successful team was Nicole & Atticus. Finally in the eighth grade, the most successful teams were Ethan Cao & Austin and Ethan Chen & Alex.
Exploring Animal Adaptations

Our first graders stepped into the role of scientists and explored animal adaptations to discover how animals survive in different climates. As they learned how whales use blubber to stay warm in icy waters, students used the scientific method to make predictions and form hypotheses before testing their ideas. During the hands-on experiment, they placed one hand in a bucket of ice-cold water with a layer of “blubber” (Crisco shortening) and the other without, quickly noticing that the protected hand stayed warm while the unprotected hand felt freezing. Using their observations, students then drew conclusions about how blubber helps animals survive in cold environments.

A Day at the International Printing Museum

Fifth graders visited the International Printing Museum, where they were divided into state delegations and participated in a mock Constitutional Convention. Students read from cards featuring the actual words of the Founding Fathers, engaging in thoughtful discussion and debate around key issues such as representation, taxation, and elections.

Through this experience, they learned how the Constitutional Convention ultimately led to the signing of the Constitution in 1789.
The day concluded with a hands-on printing activity, where students created their own bookmarks and cards. It was a fun and meaningful way to wrap up the field trip, with everyone taking home something they made.
