Learning Across Middle School
Curiosity Sparks Critical Thinking and Discovery
In English class, the eighth graders have begun their reading of Lois Lowry’s The Giver, a dystopian novel that explores themes of freedom, individuality, and memory. Before reading the novel, students learned about and discussed dystopian societies and what they can teach us about our world today. The seventh graders have just finished reading Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island, which inspired them to create their own “shipwreck journals.” These shipwreck journals are a collection of creative writing entries, in which students imagine what it would be like to be marooned on a deserted island similar to the one that Jim Hawkins explores in the novel. In the sixth grade, students are reading Norton Juster’s The Phantom Tollbooth, which is filled to the brim with figurative language and themes such as the value of knowledge, boredom, and the absurd.

In social studies class, the sixth graders had a special guest come and speak about her religion, Sikhism. Mrs. Kler explained the core tenets, many of which align with Clairbourn's Code of Ethics and with teachings found in other world religions. She had a beautiful slide and video presentation and gave everyone a gift of a diya for Diwali and traditional, yummy sweets to try. Thank you so much, Mrs. Kler!

As the seventh grade has been studying plants in science class, they have learned how adaptations make flowering seed plants the most successful group of plants on Earth. The students recently dissected flowers to identify the reproductive parts that make seeds. Students used hand lenses to get an up-close view of the ovules, which are the structures that develop into seeds. Dissecting flowers brings the diagrams in the science book to life.
Soil is an often-overlooked natural resource, and the sixth grade science class has been learning about soil health and conservation to understand this underappreciated resource more. They have learned from examples when humans have mismanaged soil, and recently, the students experimented with different soil textures to determine which would be best for growing crops. The students focused on water drainage and collected data to see which soil would retain water the longest and which would drain the quickest.

A Week of Lunar New Year Joy in Preschool
Culture, Creativity, and Community
Our preschool celebrated Lunar New Year with a week full of creativity, culture, and festive fun! They explored the year of the horse and learned about the horse as a symbol of strength, energy, and perseverance. Students expressed their creativity by painting beautiful horses using bold colors. The preschool yard was filled with excitement as students decorated traditional drums and crafted red paper lanterns—symbols of light, good fortune, and new beginnings.
Preschoolers read books about Lunar New Year traditions, including stories about family reunions, special meals, and the famous dragon dance. Inspired by what they learned, the children worked together to create their very own dragon. With lots of teamwork, they proudly held a small dragon parade, moving to the rhythm of their decorated drums and celebrating just like in traditional festivities. Many children came dressed in red or in traditional clothing, which added to the festive atmosphere and helped them feel connected to the cultural traditions being celebrated.
Through art, music, stories, and dress, our preschoolers experienced the joy and meaning of Lunar New Year in a hands-on and memorable way.

C.A.S.T. is Proud to Present: Superheroes, Unite!
Superheroes, Unite! is coming to the MPB on Friday, March 20 at 6 p.m.
Calling all superheroes! The citizens of Nova City need a patron superhero to save them from the evil clutches of the nefarious Colonel Mustard and his sidekick Hemlock. So what do they do? They hold an audition, of course! Legions of fantastic, incredible, and uncanny characters descend upon City Hall hoping the mayor and police commissioner might marvel at their strange powers, which range from super strength to super speed, from mind reading to animal whispering, from quoting Shakespeare to pointing out irony. Okay, so some superpowers are more helpful than others, but when Colonel Mustard unleashes a surprise attack on City Hall, both the mighty and the average must join together to bring justice and security to Nova City.

There will be two performances for students: Wednesday, March 18, 1:30 - 2:30 p.m. for grades 4 to 8 and Thursday, March 19, 10:30 - 11:30 a.m. for grades 1 - 3. A final public showing for all guests will be held on Friday, March 20 at 6 p.m. The Friday performance tickets are now on sale for $10. |
