Science in Action
How Engineers Turn Wastewater into Clean Water
The sixth grade is currently learning about natural resources in science class, and the students were pleased to welcome engineer and kindergarten parent Priya Khandelwal for a special presentation. Water is a precious resource, especially here in southern California, and Ms. Khandelwal shared her expertise from working on wastewater treatment plants that capture and clean used water. The students submitted questions ahead of time which were answered in the presentation.
The most common question was "How long does it take to clean the water?" The answer is: 3-4 days. Ms. Khandelwal also brought supplies for the students to build water cleaning devices of their own using cotton balls, coffee filters, and aquarium sand. Thank you to Ms. Khandelwal for sharing your time and knowledge with the sixth grade students!

First Graders Shine in Public Speaking!
At Clairbourn, public speaking begins at a young age. Students not only attend Morning Assembly, but they also demonstrate their abilities in their classrooms on a daily basis. This week, first graders shared their favorite book with their classmates. Each student wrote a review, illustrated artwork for the book, delivered a presentation in front of the class, and answered questions from their peers. Students gain confidence through this experience while learning how to form and share opinions!

January Drop Everything & Build

Well done, Cougar Engineers!

On our special visiting day, the middle school students and their visitors were challenged to build paper airplanes that could travel the farthest distance while carrying the most weight, in the form of pennies. One point was earned for each centimeter of distance, plus five points were earned for each penny. Engineering teams and their visitors needed to decide if they were going to prioritize distance or weight, or if they were going to try to optimize both as best they could.
In the end, in the sixth grade, the runners-up were Everest and Jason, and the farthest distance with the greatest weight was achieved by Stanley, Benjamin, and Jonathan’s paper airplane. In the seventh grade, the runners-up were Daniel and Jeremy, and the airplane that traveled the most distance with the most weight was engineered by Emma and Celine. Lastly, in the eighth grade, the runners-up were Victor and Cary, and the most successful plane in the entire middle school, by a lot, was built by Alex and Mark.

February is Black History Month
Student Council presented on Misty Copeland in honor of Black History Month, an annual observance each February that celebrates the achievements of African Americans.

Born in 1982 and raised in San Pedro, California, Misty Copeland grew up as one of six siblings and discovered her love for movement at a young age. After her talent stood out at a middle school dance audition, she was invited to study ballet through the Boys & Girls Club and soon earned a lead role in The Nutcracker. Despite financial challenges and long commutes, she continued training with the support of her teacher.

Misty went on to join the American Ballet Theatre, where she made history as the first African American principal ballerina, the highest rank in the company. A fun fact about Misty is that she is also an author, and one of her books is Firebird. Beyond dancing, she has appeared on television and founded organizations that expand access to the arts and support communities in need.
