Celebrating Cinco

We celebrated Cinco de Mayo this week. It is a celebration in Mexico. Cinco de Mayo is not the Mexican Independence Day. Cinco de Mayo celebrates a very important military victory against France. The battle occured on May 5 1862 in Puebla, Mexico. Cinco de Mayo is important because Mexico won against France even though it was economically, militarily, and morally in a bad place, the Mexican people united and won the battle of Puebla. We celebrate El Cinco de Mayo to remember this victory.
Clairbourn Insights

JPK students had a blast channeling their inner Jackson Pollock during a creative art activity! Special thanks go out to Ms. Storey for building the pendulum for the students to experiment with. Using splatter techniques and bold colors, they created vibrant, abstract masterpieces while learning about movement and expression in art.

Star Wars Day Build Challenge Soars

To celebrate Star Wars Day last week, the fourth and fifth grade students were invited to join the middle schoolers for their May Drop Everything & Build challenge. The teams of older and younger engineers were challenged to build a Millennium Falcon frisbee from cardboard, craft sticks, and tape. A special Thank You goes to eighth grade Class Representative Teddy for designing the challenge this year!

The Falcon frisbees were stylish and functional, with some truly impressive throwing distances achieved. There were a few crash landings, and some of the Falcon frisbees did crash into Star Destroyers, a.k.a. walls and roofs, but there were many successful runs.

The fifth graders worked with the eighth graders. The runners-up were Fiona, Austin, and James; and the frisbee that flew the farthest was flung by Sima and Nilia. The sixth graders worked with 4G. The runners-up were Aiden and Austin; and Emma, Bill, and Laksh made Han and Chewie proud. The seventh graders worked with 4B. The runners-up were Alan and Francis, and in the entire challenge, the Force was strongest with Cary and Liam.
Field Trip Higlight

First-grade students visited Descanso Gardens for a field trip. They learned about plants, engaged in hands-on activities and discovered fun facts about animal habitats. We loved hearing all the feedback they shared at Morning Assembly.

Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month

May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month—a time to honor those who have enriched American culture and society. This week, we highlighted Yo-Yo Ma, a celebrated Chinese French American cellist. Born in Paris in 1955 to musician parents, Ma began playing music at age four and gave his first public performance at five. He studied at Juilliard and later graduated from Harvard with a degree in humanities.

Over his career, Ma has earned 19 Grammy Awards, the Avery Fisher Prize, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He also uses music to promote global connection—founding the Silk Road Ensemble, Our Common Nature, and serving as an ambassador for Friends Without a Border.

Now 69, Yo-Yo Ma continues to perform around the world, using his music to inspire, unite, and uplift.

Thank you to CFA!

Thank you to CFA for showing your appreciation to the staff and faculty. It was greatly appreciated!

Inspiring Young Minds

"Storyteller of the Week" Brings Stories to Life
Mrs. Ward has been running the “Storyteller of the Week” program during the first grade library time. Each week, one or two children are chosen and given a wordless picture book to take home.

They come up with their own story to go with the book and enjoyed the opportunity to sit in the special storyteller’s chair and tell their version of the story to their classmates. We are so proud to see our young students shine!
