Clairbourn Insights

Third grade has been traveling on the Oregon Trail and recently completed the journey! Not only did they learn about the journey travelled, but they also learned the ways of pioneer life. Working in family groups, students took on a pioneer persona (including a new name) and each day joined other families in a wagon train to move across the country. On their way they encountered many beautiful landmarks, but also challenges such as river crossings.

When they were not moving their wagons along the trail, they're sewing, square dancing and learning how to churn butter. They also managed quite well with the limited food options, with many of them realizing they quite like beans!

We are happy to report the pioneers successfully completed their Oregon Trail journey. They crossed the Platte River and were amazed at the height of Chimney Rock. Our pioneers even made it to Independence Rock in time to celebrate Independence Day. Upon their arrival in Oregon City, cheers filled the air as they tossed their hats and bonnets in celebration of their 1,600 mile journey to their new lives in the "Land of Milk and Honey."

YEE HAW!

Your trail bosses,
Lucy Miller (aka Mrs. Smith) & Jasper (aka Mr. Berglund)
Meet Our New
Lower School Director

We have now finished our nationwide search for our next Lower School Director. We received resumes from dozens of candidates, interviewed our top group, and selected a well-qualified individual with all of the right qualities, skills, and abilities. We are pleased to announce Mrs. Rebecca Messler has accepted the position.

Mrs. Messler has taught for 15 years at four different schools ranging from public charter to religious to independent. This includes teaching and leadership roles across all elementary grades, with several years in kindergarten specifically and years of amazing service as our middle school math teacher. She has worked with an educational therapist supporting students with learning differences. She has run a residential summer program for many years, managing both staff and volunteers, supporting the activities of the children, and handling parental concerns and expectations. In each of these roles, she has proven herself to be a skilled communicator, a calming presence, and a passionate and caring educator. She holds a multiple-subject California credential, a single-subject Foundational Math Credential, a Master's in Education with a concentration in Educational Policy and Administration, and completed her thesis focused on early childhood education.

She will assume her new role this summer and will work closely with Mrs. Paciorek in the transition. We are excited to have her contribute to Clairbourn in new ways.

A Community Full of Heart

Clairbourn's second grade successfully completed their service learning project! Through this experience, students developed empathy and gained an understanding of how people live in circumstances different from their own. This annual pocket change drive collects funds to benefit Door of Hope, a transitional shelter for families with children who are experiencing homelessness. Students collected a total of $2,051.37. They also practiced their math skills by counting the daily totals and their public speaking skills by making daily reports to the school. Bravo!
Keep on Staying Curious, Cougars!

First Grade Highlights

The first grade students participated in a building challenge to design and build a bunny burrow to protect a bunny from the spring rain. The bunny also had to be able to enter and leave the burrow. Students worked in small groups to create a design, which they incorporated into the actual build. They used a variety of materials to construct their burrows: aluminum foil, wax paper, plastic wrap, toilet paper rolls, Unifix cubes, pipe cleaners, and construction paper. Let's check out their design thinking process and problem-solving journey!

They also have been busy studying animal adaptations and how animals survive in different climates. Students learned how whales use their blubber to survive the cold. They experienced this by putting their hands in buckets of ice-cold water! One hand was protected by the "blubber," which was Crisco shortening, while the other hand was not. Students quickly realized the hand protected by the "blubber" was warm, and the hand not protected by the "blubber" was freezing.

Spring Concert:
All About Seuss!

Saturday, April 26
10:30 - 11:30 a.m.
We are looking forward to our Spring Concert on Saturday, April 26 staring at 10:30 a.m. Students need to wear blue jean pants or shorts with the Clairbourn t-shirt and be in the classroom by 10 a.m. Please bring a blanket or a low chair, and enjoy the music on the lawn! Let's celebrate All About Seuss!

A Trip to International Printing Museum

Our fifth graders went on an exciting field trip to the International Printing Museum. They learned about typography, typesetting and the history of printing by experiencing what a colonial printing shop was like. They saw how Franklin’s press was used and observed the Gutenberg machines that are 1400-years-old.

Students learned about the evolution of communication through print and even got to print cards by hand on a variety of authentic printing presses. They certainly left with a deeper appreciation for the art of printing and a connection to the past!

The fifth graders also participated in a Constitutional Convention conversation and discussed the questions pertaining to the issues of the growing nation. Divided into state delegations, students debated the same topics the Founding Fathers once did: representation, taxation, and elections. Each student took on the challenge of resolving these foundational issues, culminating in the symbolic signing of the Constitution of 1789. Bravo, Cougars!
